Radial Shockwave therapy (RSWT) is a specialist non-invasive treatment for chronic & painful musculoskeletal conditions, including tendon & soft tissue injuries. It is a procedure where shockwaves are passed through the skin to the injured area, increasing blood flow to help accelerate the body’s healing process, reduce pain & provide ease of movement. RSWT is used in the treatment of
It is included in the national institue of clinical excellence (NICE) guidelines for the management of chronic tendinopathies involving conditions such as plantar fasciopathy & Achilles tendinopathy & clinical studies have shown success rates above 80%.
During & Following Treatment
You will experience some pain/discomfort during treatment, but this should be tolerable. There are no restrictions following treatment, although it is recommended that you do not undertake any intense exercise within the first 24 hours. You may experience immediate pain relief, but if there is still pain following treatment simple painkillers such as paracetamol can be used. Do not use anti-inflammatory medication such as Ibuprofen or use ICE on the treated area as both will affect the body’s inflammatory response & healing process stimulated by shockwave therapy.
Pain relief may be felt immediately but long term effects are normally seen after 3 months. All patients should be reviewed after 6-12 weeks by their clinician or referring clinician after having completed the course of shockwave treatment.
